Hot on the heels of the announcement that outposts of McDonald’s in Australia would finally be getting their own Monopoly sweepstakes, Burger Business is reporting that the fast-food chain’s Down Under locations will soon be getting three brand-new burger varieties to call their own, all under the umbrella of "Tastes of America."

The three new sandwiches will come in three different styles, each apparently influenced by different states: There’s the "California," a fried chicken patty topped with a sweet chile lime mayo; the Angus beef "Smoky Texan," topped with a "smoky Texan sauce;" and, finally, the "New York Classic," complete with mustard, mayonnaise, and pickles.

Other non-burger items that are part of the new limited-time-only deal include "Chili Cheese Pops" (similar to jalapeño poppers), ice cream cones, a banana split shake, and a "Roadhouse Brekkie Roll," which is topped with an egg, ham, and grilled onions.

According to the site, these new items could be rolled out as early as this week.


Potato fans who want a break from the usual golden-brown McDonald’s French Fries can order McPatatas instead, as long as they are in Mexico. McPatatas are made from one hundred percent natural potatoes that are cut into wedge shapes. The potatoes are cooked until they’re crispy and then seasoned. Customers have the option of dressing their potato wedges in McQueso sauce or eating them plain. McDonald’s Mexico reports that adding McQueso sauce to McPatatas will make them taste “exquisite”. Queso sauce is cheesy Mexican dip, so adding a little McQueso fun to your McPatatas probably will result in one heck of a tasty snack. Of course, you can also add other toppings, such as classic ketchup. It’s up to you. Lots of people do fast food hacks these days that allow them to experiment with their fast food items. For example, someone might add hot sauce from their purse or knapsack to a fast food meal, or combine sauces available at a fast-food restaurant. Hacking menus are fun. So, what else is fun and novel on the McDonald’s Mexico menu? Well, menus change from time to time, but the Mexican Mickey D’s are currently selling a Signature BBQ Crispy Onion burger, a Signature Club House burger and an intriguingly named McNifica burger. The McNifica is a typical burger garnished with pickles, lettuce, onion, American cheese, mayo, mustard, ketchup and a couple of slices of tomato.

If you’re used to the usual Oreo McFlurry, but wish that you could try new McFlurry flavors regularly, you may want to head for Germany, where you’ll be able to enjoy a Marshmallow Blueberry McFlurry, for as long as this cool and creamy sweet treat stays on the menu. Germany has offered some fun McFlurry flavors in the past, including the legendary, but no longer available, Unicorn Fruit Loops McFlurry. When it comes to the Marshmallow Blueberry McFlurry, blueberries cut a little of the sweetness, thanks to their tart flavor, but this McFlurry is still plenty sweet, thanks to its marshmallows and vanilla-flavored soft serve ice cream. For those who crave the sweet, rather than the savory, McFlurries are guilty pleasures. Some delicious McFlurry flavors have been offered at home and internationally. In Germany, you’ll also be able to order a Snickers Caramel or Twix Caramel McFlurry. Clearly, there are Germans with sweet tooths and they do have a fun trio of McDonald’s McFlurries to choose from.

An American expat living Down Under has revealed why she believes Australian McDonald’s is better than the US.

Kaymie Wuerfel relocated from Florida to Sydney in early 2020 after tying the knot with her Australian beau, and has been ‘learning to live’ in the Harbour City since the first coronavirus lockdown in March.

To pass time during the pandemic, the Clearwater native began documenting the biggest differences between life in the US and Down Under in a series of TikTok videos which have drawn a fan base of more than 133,000 followers.

In her latest clip titled ‘three things I’ve come to love in Australia’, Ms Wuerfel said she prefers Australian McDonald’s to the American version because the quality of the food is far superior.

‘I never ate it much in America because when you eat McDonald’s in America you genuinely feel like you are going to die,’ she said.

‘And I know here is probably not much better but it is so, so good.

‘I’m eating those Chicken McPieces and downing my frozen Coke, the last thing on my mind is my health – which probably is a bad thing.’

Viewers agreed, with plenty suggesting this could be down to Australia’s premium ingredients such as grass-fed beef, or the oil chips and chicken nuggets are fried in.

Many complained of falling ill hours after eating a meal from an American Maccas.

‘I tried McDonald’s while I was in the US and I literally was sick a few hours later,’ one person wrote.

‘I tried the USA Macca’s too when I was there. It’s so bad, I don’t know how it became so big,’ said another.

Later in her video, Ms Wuerfel also praised Australia’s superannuation system and currency, saying the different coloured notes made it much easier to use.

Australian denominations make up a rainbow of shades, with pink and purple $5 bills, blue $10 bills, reddish orange $20 bills and yellow $50 bills, while in America, all paper money is green.

‘I love the currency as the different colours make it easy to recognise, plus it’s very durable,’ Ms Wuerfel said.

Earlier this month, Ms Wuerfel made headlines by sharing the biggest culture shocks she faced after moving Down Under, including using the C-word to greet people, free healthcare, chicken salt and being charged 15 cents for a grocery bag.

During a trip to the supermarket with her husband, the young brunette said she realised all the prices labelled on shelves were already ‘marked to include tax’.

She said the conversation came up when she asked him to give her $5 plus tax so she could pay for a tub of peanut butter.

‘But he told me that all prices in Australia are marked to include tax… I realised how much simpler life is buying things for the price as marked,’ she explained.

She was similarly surprised when a checkout employee wanted to charge her 15 cents for a grocery bag.

‘She asked: ‘Would you like a bag?” and I was like: “Of course I’d like a bag.” Then she goes: “Okay, that’s 15 cents per bag” 15 cents per bag?’ she recalled.

Supermarkets in Australia have been charging customers money for reusable bags in an attempt to crack down on single-use plastic bags.


McDonald's dumped 'Create Your Taste' in the US but it's staying in Australia and even coming to the drive-through

Fear not, Australian lovers of Maccas’ custom burgers: the “Create Your Taste” menu is here to stay.

Although the custom burger line is being pulled in the US, a McDonald’s spokeperson confirmed the “Create Your Taste” menu is staying in Australia — and expanding.

“It’s been incredibly successful and our customers have loved the different, great tasting ingredients we are committed to continuing to offer gourmet burgers in our restaurants,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said.

“We are always evolving our menu and next year we will look to extend the offer in to our drive thru which is what customers are telling us they want.”

The “Create Your Taste” menu began rolling out in Australia in early 2015 and started expanding nationally this year.

This morning BI reported that McDonald’s in the US will pull its “Create Your Taste” menu and replace it with a “Signature Crafted Recipes” menu instead, which offers similar custom-designed burgers — but with much less customisation and choice.

“Create Your Taste” is being quietly removed from roughly 2000 restaurants (1 in 7) in the US from San Francisco to New York.

The problems with the menu in the US had various causes.

Some franchisees complained about the cost of the implementation of the program which included installing the new kiosks and expanding the kitchen to handle the new toppings.

Kitchen operations were also slowed down.

Some customers complained that the burgers were too expensive and took too long to cook.

They aren’t getting rid of customisable options from the US menu entirely though. According to a spokesperson from McDonald’s in the US, customers liked ordering from kiosks and personalising their food.

Instead, the new “Signature Crafted Recipes” menu offers customers “bundled” topping packages like the “pico guacamole” which includes smashed avocado and salsa, “maple bacon dijon” and “sweet BBQ bacon”, rather than allowing customers to choose exactly what particular sauce, cheese and extras combination they want on their burger.

Turns out that bread in America is a heck of a lot sweeter than what we eat in Australia. That's because of the added sugar, which I'm still very confused about. I can't imagine anything worse than chowing down into a savoury burger, which is also sweet?!

McDonald’s is famous for its consistency across every country and let’s face it, the saviour of hungover tourists the world over.

But one American woman now living in Australia has made the bold claim that Macca’s not only tastes different Down Under but is also better here than in its country of origin.

Kaymie Wuerfel is a Florida woman who now lives in Australia, and has gained more than 133,000 followers for her content pointing out the differences between her new home country and the States.

In a new TikTok titled “Three things I’ve come to love in Australia”, Ms Wuerfel said she preferred Australian Macca’s to the American version as the 𠇏ood quality” was so much better.

In the comments, plenty of Aussies agreed, suggesting it could be because US McDonald’s used different oil to cook their food. Other customers have previously claimed that the difference is down to Australia’s premium ingredients such as high-quality beef, or the lack of sugar in Aussie bread.

US woman baffled by Aussie checkout question

Last week Ms Wuerfel posted a video revealing the question she had received at an Aussie supermarket checkout that left her lost for words.

While buying food at a supermarket Ms Wuerfel said she was asked by an employee if she “would like a bag”.

“Of course I𠆝 like a bag,” she replied, prompting the checkout worker to tell her it would be � cents per bag”.

𠇏ifteen cents … per bag?” was Ms Wuerfel’s baffled reply.

She said the woman working the checkout didn’t “understand why I’m acting surprised” and the expat tried to �t like this is normal for me”.

Aussies who watched the video explained that the 15 cent charge was supposed to be a deterrent to using plastic and encourage people to bring their own bags.

“TIP: Leave bags in the car. You never know when you’re gonna pop in for some last-minute food shopping, so always have some on hand,” one person wrote.

“I’ll take 15c bags in exchange for universal health care any day,” another person commented.

“If you came over a few years ago, bags were free. But we’re busy stopping climate change,” another commenter said.

Other culture shocks Ms Wuerfel said she experienced were realising you 𠇍on’t leave tips in Australia” after eating at a restaurant, which she said was the “most amazing thing I’ve ever heard”.

Ms Wuerfel also recalled being asked if she wanted chicken salt for the first time but having “literally no idea what chicken salt is”.

China

Mc Aloo Tikki, Mc Veggie, Mc Chicken, Mc Egg, Filet-o-fish burger, chicken wraps, veg wraps, chicken kebab burger are very popular in India. Recent additions in India include rice bowls, biriyani and naan wraps.

Past promotional items have included the McPaneer and Grilled Chicken Royale, ⎚] Mexican Spice Chicken and Veg, Asian Hot Garlic Dip and African Peri Peri Shake Shake (as part of the Spice Fest) ⎛] Indi-McSpicy and the McCurry Pan.

McDonald's in India do not serve beef nor pork products, in deference to Hindu and Islam beliefs respectively. Vegetarian and meat based meals are prepared in separate areas of the restaurant due to religious laws cooks preparing vegetarian dishes wear a distinctive green apron and non vegetarian cooks wear a red apron. ⎜]

Indonesia

To accommodate Muslim-majority population, all McDonald's in Indonesia are certified halal, which means they do not serve bacon or pork patties, while serving only beef, chicken, and fish. ⎝] Local items include crispy and spicy fried chicken the McRice, a small mound of steamed rice wrapped in paper and available to supersize McSoup, a chicken flavored soup with bits of croutons and vegetables and Buryam (short for bubur ayam or chicken congee), later renamed as Bubur Ayam Spesial with the addition of fried egg topping. ⎞] Sambal chili sauce, an essential component of Indonesian cuisine, and tomato ketchup are available as condiments.

McDonald's announces a new plant-based burger and they named it the McPlant

There's a new burger coming to McDonald's menus in 2021, and it's already creating excitement among vegan, vegetarian, and environmentally-conscious fast food lovers.

The new plant-based burger, called the McPlant, was first reported by USA Today on Monday. It was crafted as part of McDonald's new "Accelerating the Arches" growth strategy, in which the company has pledged to focus on better serving communities and making a positive impact by "responsibly sourcing quality ingredients" and "driving climate action to protect the planet."

Sure, the "McPlant" is a ridiculous, painfully unappetizing name for a burger, but the effort behind the new menu item is a noble one. Since cutting down on meat consumption can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, relying more on alternate meats has proven beneficial in the fight against climate change.

The McPlant is certainly a step in the right direction for fast food chains, and USA Today confirmed that the meatless burger could inspire a larger line of plant-based products at McDonald's.

"McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s," Ian Borden, McDonald's international president, said at an investor meeting per USA Today. "In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches."

Though McDonald's has ventured into plant-based territory before — launching the Big Vegan TS burger in Germany and vegan nuggets in Norway in 2019 — other fast food chains have added more widely accessible meatless menu items. Burger King, for instance, began selling an "Impossible Whopper" in the U.S. in 2018 and it has since debuted nationwide.

"There are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich," McDonald's said, according to USA Today. "It's made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings."

Though exact dates related to a McPlant rollout remain unclear, it's expected that markets around the world will begin testing the meat-free burger in 2021.
