This simple double chocolate chip recipe is the same recipe that my mother taught me. It makes large chewy cookies and uses basic ingredients that everyone has at home.

Sussex, England, UK

176 people made this

IngredientsMakes: 12 large cookies

  • 225g butter
  • 140g caster sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 225g plain flour
  • 55g cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 85g milk or dark chocolate chips
  • 85g milk or dark chocolate, cut into large chunks

MethodPrep:10min ›Cook:10min ›Extra time:15min › Ready in:35min

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C / Gas 5.
  2. Beat together the butter and sugar in a large bowl with a wooden spoon. Add in the egg yolk and vanilla, and beat well.
  3. Sieve the flour and cocoa into the bowl, and then add the salt and the 85g of chocolate chips. Stir the dry and wet mixtures together until everything is well combined.
  4. Divide the mixture into 12 balls for large chewy cookies and 20 for smaller crispier cookies. Roll each portion into a ball and place onto a greased or parchment-lined baking tray, with about 2cm between each cookie. Slightly flatten each with the palm of your hand. Press the large chunks of chocolate into the tops of the cookies before putting them into the oven.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes and then leave to cool on the baking tray for a further 15 minutes.

If you love white chocolate, use a mixture of white and dark or white and milk chocolate in this recipe.

How to make double chocolate chip cookies:

Add your melted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar to a mixing bowl and mix until well combined.

Add in an egg and some vanilla and stir again.

Stir in your flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, espresso powder, and salt. These are all basic cookie ingredients here!

Once you have a nice thick dough, dump in some chocolate chips and holiday m&m&rsquos.

Feel free to swap out the m&m candies for any holiday or just leave them out entirely and keep them more true to their classic selves.

It&rsquos hard to tell from the photos, but these are BIG cookies. I love big bakery cookies like this and think they&rsquore so much more fun than a bunch of tiny cookies.

Portion this into 9 large balls of dough. They&rsquore big, but don&rsquot be scared. You won&rsquot regret these thick chewy cookies!

Bake these cookies for 11 minutes exactly. It&rsquos okay if they look a bit underdone &ndash they&rsquoll finish up on the hot baking sheet.

Can I Freeze These No Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies?

Yes, you can definitely freeze these cookies after you bake them! For best results eat them within 6 months.

You can even freeze the dough after it&rsquos made. Just be sure to wrap it tightly (I like Press & Seal for this) and use it within a few months.

I hope you enjoy my easy chocolate chip cookies without butter recipe. Any questions? Please leave a comment below or send me a message on The Frugal South&rsquos Facebook page!

Add the chocolate for this rich double chocolate chip cookies recipe

Once the dough is ready, mix in the chocolate chips for your rich double chocolate chip cookies. Add in a half cup of chocolate chips, reserving a few to top the dough with later, and mix until they're evenly distributed throughout the chocolate cookie dough.

Utilizing good-quality chocolate chips such as Ghirardelli is best for this recipe, but any chocolate chips will do. Or, you could chop up a block of baker's chocolate to add chocolate chunks to the mix instead. It's up to you to choose the type of chocolate you'd prefer.

Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

These classic chocolate chip cookies are made with the addition of chopped pecans, but feel free to omit them or replace them with more chocolate chips if you aren't a fan of nuts. Or, instead of pecans, add walnuts or brickle bits to the cookie dough.

Chocolate chip cookies, also known as Toll House Cookies, were first created by Ruth Wakefield for her Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. She made them with chopped Nestlé chocolate bars. The recipe—originally called "chocolate crunch cookies"—was published in a Boston newspaper. People wrote to Mrs. Wakefield for the recipe and sales of Nestlé chocolate bars increased. With her permission, the Nestle company began printing the recipe on their semisweet chocolate bar wrappers. In 1939, Nestle began producing and packaging the chocolate morsels we use today.

This is a small batch and makes about two dozen cookies. The recipe is easily scaled up for a larger batch. Make them for your family or take them along to a party or bake sale!
